Alex Chimilio

Alex’s love of art started as a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, New York. The emerging art scene of the early 80’s fueled his desire for creative expression. Graffiti culture and the pop art of Keith Haring gave him a sense of attachment to this movement. Seeing his commitment to art at an early age, Alex’s aunt enrolled him in drawing classes at New York City’s School of Visual Arts (S.V.A.) From that point on, Alex was hooked. He would draw, to the frustration of his mother, on every surface area he could find.

Towards the end of high school, Alex started to explore other forms of expression, which led him to fashion. He pulled his inspiration for fashion from the architecture and street culture of New York City. He saw fashion as “soft, movable sculpture” for the human body. Alex began his fashion career with J. Crew as a designer of prints for intimate apparel and womens wovens, then moved into menswear for Tommy Hilfiger, designing graphics for jeans and T-shirts.

Wanting to understand fashion from a branding perspective, Alex started working for Graj+Gustavsen, a fashion branding studio in NYC. He helped develop concepts for brands such as Radio Flyer, Osh Kosh and Sierra Club, all who wanted to broaden their fashion reach. After G+G, Alex worked as Senior Graphic designer for Nautica and as Creative Director for a Shanghai apparel manufacturer, Secret Society 1832.

Alex also produces fine art, photography and film. His work has included a broad range of subjects from toys from the 70’s, 80s, and 90’s to films about love and loss. His work has shown been in numerous venues and galleries throughout New York City.

Alex studied Graphic Design at Pratt Institute and Men’s and Women’s Design at The Fashion Institute of Technology. He has taken additional classes for film direction, fiction writing and acting at The New School University and New York University. Alex lives and works in New York City.

Nautica's coolest company initiative was its mandatory sailing classes. It only makes sense-Nautica is a SAILING inspired brand. For three weeks, we got on board the boats and learned the skills of a sailor. After the lessons, we would head back to the studio to use our new knowledge to design. Below are some of the trims, graphics and details which spawned from my time sailing. (I took extra lessons on my own to complete a certification to sail a 24'er. I'm hooked! But I would never want to own my own boat-it takes a lot of work to maintain...but one should never say never....)

This is an example on how my graphics were used in many different product categories.

One of the best projects I ever had was designing graphics for the U.S. and Chinese Sailing Teams. This was the first time that I ever had to get my artwork approved by an international division of Nautica and the Official Olympics Sponsorship Committee! I still remember the crazy e-mails that went on for weeks! When the project was finally complete, it was really cool to see my designs on the U. S. and Chinese Sailing Teams.

TailorByrd (Pronounced as one word. Trust me, I was corrected.) is a menswear company, who wanted to expand their scope. I was hired to design a collection of boys wear graphics. The theme of the collection was the Grand Prix, in New York City. (After all, what boy doesn't love to race cars!) The graphics, below, were inspired by the 1960's Grand Prix of Monaco, with a younger, more friendly approach.

WeSC, We are the Superlative Conspiracy, is a streetwear-fashion brand for "intellectual slackers", hosted a T-shirt design contest. I designed a collection of Tees which not only embodied the ideology of the brand, but also incorporated the images and motifs of my personal artwork.

Burger Love is an accessories line out of Los Angeles that wanted to venture out into other areas of product design. I was asked to design a line of fun men's T-shirts inspired by the many different roles and personalities of the film industry. They came up with a list of funny phrases, and I created the below graphics, with a flavor of irony.

Film has always been a passion of mine. In early 2001, I decided that I, too, would like to try my hand at filmmaking. It was then that I learned the great difference between the viewer and the maker. The road to making movies for me was a long and arduous process. At times, it seemed like a series of slow rising nightmares that made me question myself, my art and the very notion of filmmaking. Overall, I'm glad I did go through the exercise of making movies, and that I have a small body of work to show for it.

Below is series of the short films made in 2001 and 2003. Could have I been the next Truffaut? Maybe? You can decide. But, I won't lose sleep over that question.

It's not a secret that I'm a fan of kicks ( just ask anyone whose seen my collection). I DON'T think of myself as a "sneaker head", don't know if that term is still in uses. For a while, I was into Nike dunks of course, the sneaker that launched a million imitators. Some designs good, some bad. Here are three designs I did based on themes that I was playing with at the time. All done around the spring of 2004.

The first is a Hawaiian design. I needed a pair of kicks that matched my summer look, which would consist of finding vintage Hawaiian shirts, then tailoring them to fit by slimming down the sides. Pairing the shirts with vintage tuxedo pants (you know the ones with the satin stripe on the side) cut into shorts. I know crazy, but it would have looked sweet. I may do it someday.

The second, a pair of Bolex dunks were based on the Bolex 16mm film camera. I never found the camera at a good price, which was for the best, the film was pretty expensive. There are two options for this one.

Originally this poster series was for a magazine called Entropy I was going to start with a couple of friends. The magazine was about art music & culture purely from a graphic perspective. it's first issue was about icons in society. one friend did a series of large scale diamond paintings, another a mash-up of religious icons as graphic symbols.

My section was music. I wanted to design a poster series based on two giants of music history. The king of Hip-Hop Biggie Smalls and the king of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley. If these two where alive ( during the same time of course ) what would it be like for the two on the road, starting as unknowns then making it to super stardom, to there final show ending in Central Park. How could I tell this story from a graphic perspective.

Bram, Was a story I written in 2004, It tells the story of a brother Daniel & his sister Theresa growing up in the foster care system in New York City after the murder of there mother by her ex-boyfriend. The children grow-up to lead very troubled lives. Do to there history of abuse and neglect. Theresa tries to break the cycle by becoming a writer in NYC. She begins to write the story of her history set during the Renaissance.

A Fire Burns in Memphis

I remember arriving at the Memphis in my cocoon pod. I awoke to find a world much different then the one I had left behind. The year was 2156. The Memphis was my new home. It must have been the length of six football stadiums set in an octagonal form. Its height was that of 20 skyscrapers, its skeleton was an inner web of steel tubes twisting into spiral shapes. This all was incase by massive sheets of contorting glass. Some of the tubes where hollowed out to allow for easy transport of people and cargo. Yet the most amazing sight was that of space it’s self. Never my wildest of memories I could have ever known that the void of space could resound in so much color. It was not this dark abyss at all, rather it was a series of night blues in steps of darkness to light, and toward the horizon it was shades of fiery reds to the most neon of yellows, till it all blew out to a stark bright white. I stared at it for as long as I could hoping in some small way to find the creation of existence.

I must have been 15 or 25. I couldn’t gauge it exactly; Earth’s aging system had been antiquated for the past 20 years. I was one of the very few who’s birth was conceived naturally. I remembered the year I arrived because it was the date of my birth. March 1^st 2056. My parents where so proud having a health baby boy. My bone structure may have aged, but my boyish features of a young full-face light brown eyes and brown soft hair still remain. My reflection from one of the towering sheets of glass was proof of this even though I had grown taller since leaving home.

The Memphis was known as the mating vessel. Its purpose was for procreation of the kind. In my case human. Though they were other species and additional terrestrials send for the same intentions. The ship was governed by a totalitarian regime known as The Blue Rider. Yes, I know the name seems perplexing since it was a German artistic movement set during the early part of the 19^thCentury, meant to promote the cause of Modernism. Currently the word Modernism stands for conservation of one’s past ideology. Funny I don’t think Kandinsky, Klee and Marc would have ever imagine a world were there ideas of innovation would have lead to this The Memphis.

I was in love. I didn’t know to whom and what yet. But I was in love. I’ve heard of stories of some of the matches made here not to have worked. Although rare this did happen. For some reason compatibility issues came into question. Since in this time love was a very quantifiable concept. It was heavily studied, measured, analyzed and eventually stored for future use. I saw it being transported in boxes no larger than what a pair of shoes would fit in, but heavily guarded as a perishes commodity like gold would have been in my day.

I still have memories of being back home. Back then natural fibers such as cottons, silks and wool where among my most highly valued posseions. And so now I carry a sweater my mother had knitted. Its color was of a newly formed rose tinted pink. The buttons were made of pearl. Mother always believed that the pearls natural beauty was decoration enough and used the whole of the tiny orbs. The suit I had to wear was grey. Each stage of courtship required a different color. Introductions where of a midnight tone. Embracing (the stage I was at currently) was done in dust. And the final phase in which one would be ready to receive love was optic white.

I was frightened. Yes I know this place. Of course back in my day the pressures of finding a mate were left up to so many variables is was a wonder that anyone connected. The Memphis did away with that. After a brief interview to gather information such as height, blood type, resistance to disease and IQ my love was then numbered and catalog. I was number 18-5-25.The uses of my given name was no longer valid.

I didn’t understand how this worked, but the gradual light shifts on the large glass panels indicated what time of day it was. All of the meetings where at night, and conducted in large open air rooms known as The Lofts. These spaces were spars in design meant to resemble a minimalist esthetic. Rows of benches where a line one after another. People sat facing forward alternating in sex, male female. We all wore the dust color this was the embracing room. A proctor walked in between the rows of attendees calling the numbers of whom where present. I was seated next to a woman who was number 7-18-135. She had dark hair that ended at the middle of he back, it reminded me of Onyx in the way the colors shifted from deep blues to black as she straighten out the lapel of her jacket. Her eyes where of the same darkness as her hair with the same suddle shades in color.

The proctor began the embracing phase. In a commanding voice he request that all of the men to turn left and the women to turn right and extend your arms. This was not meant to be romantic, a concept which too died out long ago. As in every phase of the courtship period this was heavily regulated. The proctor would walk around with clip board in hand that displayed holographic images with measurements on how far apart the participants must be: 6 inches apart from hip to hip, all arms 12 inches up from lower back. The embraces would last no longer then a few timed minutes, and then couples would alternate men right women left. I held her closer to my chest wanting to feel her heart beat. I did not let go neither did she. The couples on opposite sides of us had a look of confusion on their faces. We where reprimanded and threaten with expulsion.

The embracing phase lasted 3 days. On the 2^nd once again I sat next to 7-18-135. She hesitantly opened up with a faint smile toward me and quickly lowed her eyes. A gesture I have not witnessed since being on The Memphis. It filled me with a sensation all but forgotten, that of being human. We were assigned to embrace. We both instinctively leaned in closer than allowed. For reasons that, the proctor was at the far end of the room he did not notice our breach of contact. I could feel her tremble in my arms, but still I pressed her closer to me. In a low voice I whispered, “My name is Rey.” Her breathing stood still and the trembles stopped. In my mind I tried desperately to find an expression from her body that would indicate what she must have looked like at that very moment. I could not. Her heart started up again but faster that before. I felt an inhalation of air next to my ear her lips quivered a bit as if to speak, but the moment was lost as the proctor turned to face the room instructing all to alternate.

On the 3^rd day, half of the faces in the room had changed. Some had moved on to the final stage. Most where rejected and sent back home. I’ve heard that the occasion in which love would be received was void of any ceremonial jubilation. It would be a low level event. Like being at an airport terminal waiting for your gate to be announced. Never the less I was here to find love. I caught her face in the crowd of complaisant bodies. I think she may have noticed me first her face appeared satisfied in recognizing the familiar. We took our seats at the center of the room. The proctor walked by calling our numbers with disapproving eyes. We held our embrace much longer then legally allowed. She tilted her lips toward my ear I could feel her soft breath. My body vibrated with a sensation I had never known, then in a faint voice she spoke: “My name is Grace”.

I wondered if our fate was meant to be like that of so many others. I may never know. What happen next seemed like a rush of events happing in slow motion. We where placed in a holding cell at the outer most wing of the ship. We were required to remove our grey suits and given loose fitting tunics as coveralls. The posseions we had traveled with where gathered up and given to us. We both stood in silence for a long time. Briefly I tried to semis what fate we had in store, but mostly I grew concerned for Grace. The room was cold, I’d never thought about the tempeture of this place until now. She shivered by me. I removed the sweater I had brought along from a small bag I traveled with and wrapped it around her. She turned to me caressing the sides of her arms.

I lowered my head and thought to myself. The Memphis was right. Love was not this grand event I’d imagine it must have been, rather it was filled with small experiences like this moment. For me it was not finite, it could be as big as the universe, or as small as a pearl. In her eyes I no longer found the uncertainty that lay within me. I took Grace in my arms and simply loved her.
